Ignore the urge.
Instead, pay attention.
Forget the pretty metaphors you crafted,
Like a blacksmith forges armor,
Protecting oneself from an unruly truth.
Take a walk before sitting down to write.
There's much to see – you're missing that!
Listen to the birds,
And you'll find they sing a familiar tune.
Look for footprints in the dirt.
Before you write, breathe!
There's nothing worth saying
That cannot wait a while.
Smile!
Hold your wife's hand,
She's the closure of every rhyme.
And if you choose to write,
Write something nice, even if it's banal.
Write something like an adolescent love,
With a half-baked metaphor
About the beautiful sun above.
